Is it possible for an abuser to repent?

Is it possible for an abuser to repent?

Like the attackers in the Jiangyou incident—arrogant, repeat offenders, and not afraid of going to the police station many times—in reality, the chance they repent is almost zero.

The reasons are:

1. The nature of the human heart is hard. 1.

The Bible says: “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)

This means that without the work of the Holy Spirit, people will not admit their sin or ask for forgiveness.

Many attackers, even if punished by the law, are only afraid of the result, not truly admitting the nature of their sin.

2. Lack of an environment for repentance. 2.

True repentance needs someone to point out the sin and guide the person back to the truth with love. (Galatians 6:1)

In reality, schools, families, and even the justice system rarely provide such spiritual guidance. They focus more on “discipline” or “image control.”

If the people around them excuse or cover up their actions, the attackers may become even worse.

3. Repentance is a rare gift of grace. 3.

The Bible tells us: “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them.” (John 6:44)

Therefore, true repentance is not common. It is a special gift of God.

In history, there are a few serious criminals who came to faith and repented in prison, but the number is very small.

4. The Christian balanced view. 4.

We cannot naively think “everyone will repent,” and we cannot delay justice because maybe someone will repent.

Justice must come first, and mercy must be built on the foundation of justice.

For those who keep doing evil and do not repent, the Bible clearly says they must be restrained and separated. (Romans 13:4; 1 Corinthians 5:13)

Summary  总结

From the Bible’s view, the attackers in the Jiangyou incident will probably not repent, unless God works in them directly.

Therefore: 因此:

The law must hold them fully accountable, with no softness.

The church and believers can pray for their repentance, but should not put hope in human nature.

The protection of the victims and the pursuit of justice must be the first priority.
