Reformed theology teaches that history is not random. Everything happens under God’s care and plan (Providence).

The Puritans’ escape, the storm pushing their ship, their landing at Cape Cod, the help from the Native Americans, and the harvest celebration—

From a human view, these look like accidents, but in the Reformed view, these are:

God leading His people through suffering

God using even non-believers (Native Americans) to complete His plan

God shaping a faithful community through hardship

Romans 8:28: “In all things God works for thegoodof those who love Him.”

Thanksgiving is a living example of God’s Providence.

There were three key parts of Puritan life:

(Sola Scriptura
The Bible is the highest authority (Sola Scriptura)

(Family Worship
Family worship every day

Teaching everyone to read the Bible

These became the foundation of American civilization.

America’s first schools, Harvard University, and early government structures were strongly shaped by the Bible and Calvinist teaching.

The Mayflower Compact shows key Calvinist political ideas:

Human sinfulness → everyone needs laws

(Covenant
Covenant → people make agreements together as equals

Community self-rule and shared responsibility

This matches Reformed covenant theology.

It later influenced America’s:

local self-government

constitutional system

checks and balances

The Mayflower Compact was the first real practice of Calvinist political thought in North America.

The Puritans were not thanking nature, food, weather, luck, or friendship.

They clearly wrote:

Thanks to God for His care and protection.

They understood that:

The harvest came from God

Life came from God

Their survival ability came from God

Even the help from the Native Americans was God’s grace

This fits Reformed teaching: Soli Deo Gloria—glory to God alone.

The Puritans received help from the Native Americans, and the Native Americans received protection from the alliance.

This is what Reformed theology calls “Common Grace.”

God makes:

the sun shine on bothgoodand bad people

His grace fall on believers and non-believers

So the help between the two peoples was also a work of God’s common grace.

Thanksgiving reminds us:

Give thanks in all situations

Family worship is more important than the turkey

Learn the Puritans' respect for the Bible

Follow their faith in hard times

God rules over history and also rules in our lives
